Important dates



  • Friday, 5, 2018 – Deadline for electronic submission of “Parent/Student Declaration” forms to be submitted electronically. Also, deadline for uploading of individual and school group photograph (with student names) to the Sterling Scholar Website ( Minimum photo sizes should be: For group shot, 6.5 inches x 4.5 inches, 300 dpi (or about 135 kb); for individual shot, 1.75 inches x 2.5 inches, 300 dpi (or about 66 kb).  Please review the pictures for inappropriate material (gang signs, clothing, etc.). As these pictures are to be uploaded to the portfolio there is no need to send a disc with the pictures in to this office.  But please be prepared with an electronic copy of the group and individual pictures in case of Deseret News production needs.


  • Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2018 – Deadline for submission of all electronic portfolios to the Sterling Scholar At 9:00 p.m. all students and school coordinators will be unable to make any further changes or additions to portfolios as they will be automatically submitted for review. No late submissions will be accepted.


  • Friday, February 9, 2018 – Special Sterling Scholar section published in the Deseret News and Deseret News online (


  • Monday, February 12, 2018 – Semi-finalists will be announced by email to school coordinators with the semi-final interview schedule.


  • Thursday, February 15, 2018 – Semi-final judging, North Area held at Ben Lomond High School, 1080 9th Street, Ogden; Central Area held at Copper Hills High School, 5545 West New Bingham Highway, West Jordan; South Area held at Corner Canyon High School, 12943 S. 700 E., Draper


  • Friday, February 16, 2018 – Finalists will be announced by email to school coordinators with the Finals interview schedule.


  • Tuesday, February 27, 2018 – Final judging/interviews for all finalists will be held at Westlake High School, 99 N. 200 W., Saratoga Springs, UT.


  • Tuesday, March 13, 2018 – 56th Annual Deseret News – KSL Broadcast Group Sterling Scholar Awards Ceremony at the LDS Conference Center Little Theatre, 60 West North Temple, Salt Lake City, 7 p.m. The main theatre seats 800 and there will be overflow areas if needed.
